Gov. Pat McCrory approved legislation that prevents vendors of online educational resources from using student data for targeted advertising and other purposes.

The legislation would limit how companies can use student data and would make school districts release easy-to-read student privacy policies.

About 30 states have early warning systems to tell if kids are falling behind. But some advocates worry that students' data can be used against them.
