McHattie moved into the role May 15, according to a LinkedIn post, filling a vacancy left by the March departure of Ed Winfield, who served as the county’s CIO for more than five years. (Lester Godsey, the county’s chief information security officer, filled in as interim CIO.)

McHattie has been with Maricopa County government since 2005. While working at the superior court, he established new teams, including an innovation office, and delivered a slew of new products to improve the employee and customer experience.

In total, McHattie has over 15 years of experience in technology in the public sector. Before moving to the public sector, McHattie started his career as an entrepreneur, helping to establish and grow an RFID-based pet recovery system that utilized implantable microchips for the identification and recovery of companion animals.

He also was a business development executive in the energy industry, and developed large-scale energy projects including energy efficiency upgrades and complex cogeneration projects for manufacturing and large industrial customers.

“I’m excited and honored to lead an amazing technology team serving Maricopa County,” McHattie said in a email to StateScoop. “I look forward to leveraging technology and innovation to advance the County’s digital transformation and support the County’s vision for a modern and responsive government.”
