North Carolina fixing data quality issues ‘set by set’
Like many states, North Carolina is pursuing generative artificial intelligence. And like many states, North Carolina’s data isn’t everything it could be, according to the state’s top technology official. Jim Weaver, North Carolina’s chief information officer, told StateScoop this week that his state has “a data quality issue,” but that he’s attempting to fix that through a new “data discovery initiative.” “Instead of trying to boil the entire ocean and fix the problem holistically, we’re going to fix the problem segment by segment, set by set, and get to a good outcome for our agencies,” he says. Some early targets for generative AI, he says, include language translation, helping residents find information online and analyzing legislation, which can sometimes contain hidden directives.
